The former Brazilian president detained after being deemed a flight risk
The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.
This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a document approving the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a embassy office", a statement said.
The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
He was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, the capital city.
The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
